Obviously one of the wonderful things about growing up in the greater Bay Area is how close it is to San Francisco, but sometimes that proximity can blur the lines as to what exactly counts as being a native of the city. A new video posted to Reddit yesterday by a user named coolrivers poked fun at the distinction between those who truly grew up in San Francisco, and those who proudly claim the city despite hailing from … Walnut Creek.

When you claim you’re from SF and then get called on it from r/bayarea

The video quickly amassed more than 1,300 upvotes and nearly 600 comments, with users of the site weighing in on stereotypes about neighboring Bay Area cities like Livermore, Concord and San Jose.

Some users actually owned up to the practice of falsely claiming S.F. A user named chuff3r felt embarrassed of stereotypes associated with Berkeley:

“I grew up in Berkeley”

Person: “oh THAT’S why you keep mentioning having read Between the World and Me.”

Another user, P3anutButt3rCup, noted how many people on the East Coast don’t recognize the term Bay Area, connecting it to the Chesapeake, and simply assume California equals Los Angeles.

And DanielOfficialReddit brought up the question of whether South San Francisco technically counts as San Francisco (the consensus seemed to be to claim South City, although the jury is out on proper pronunciation).
