Apple AirPods headphones range continues to make waves. The first pair sold faster than Apple could make them for months, and subsequent models, AirPods Pro and the latest over-ear headphones, AirPods Max, have been big sellers.
Now, a new report asserts that the AirPods Pro headphones are about to be replaced with a second version, and there are a couple of specific elements about the design to lend a little interest to the claim. Just as excitingly, the report also claims that a new iPhone will be released at the same time. You can read full details about that from Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly here.
Overall, details are tantalizingly thin on the ground, but the report, which comes from Japanese site Mac Otakara, says that the next AirPods Pro are not far off. They will arrive in April, just three months away, the blog claims, saying that the information comes from Chinese suppliers.
It’s often the supply chain that leaks this kind of information and although there’s no indication of the design, there’s one little clue. That’s the size of the case which will be the same thickness, 21mm from front to back.

But the height and width will change to 46mm and 54mm respectively. To save you getting out your tape measure, I can tell you that the current AirPods Pro case is 45.2mm in height, and 60.6mm wide.
So, the new case would be broadly similar but fractionally taller, by just 0.8mm and, more noticeably, 60.6mm narrower.
Although there have been rumors that the next AirPods Pro would have a strikingly different design, perhaps to remove the short stem on the current model, there’s no indication in today’s report that that’s what the new case is designed to accommodate.
Given the small change in dimensions, my guess would be that the design of the AirPods Pro themselves could remain pretty much as they are now, but that a redesigned battery or other element has allowed the slightly smaller case to adjust the placing of the earbuds inside.
That said, Apple is unlikely to change the case for the sake of it: the current case is perfectly portable and works well. So it could still signal a more extravagant redesign for the buds nestling inside the case.
With only a dozen or so weeks until release, if the report proves correct, there are likely to be more leaks between now and then.
As mentioned above, the same Mac Otakara report also mentions an updated iPhone is coming at the same time. The main indications are the timing and that it’s being referred to as iPhone SE 3rd generation.
